This is the largest nesting site for Leatherbacks in the
Western Hemisphere. Every year for thousands of years the rare and endangered
Giant Leatherback Turtles navigate the globe and return to this beach
in the thousands. During their nesting season (March - August), these
colossal creatures lay their eggs in the sand just outside your room.
Thousands of hatchlings begin the journey and complete the cycle of life
gushing out of the sand and heading back to the sea (May - September).
This area of the Northern Range enjoys the largest variety
of birds in all Trinidad. Birds can be spotted right outside your
back window or in our garden behind the Estate Main House. For the
more demanding birdwatchers we are glad to organize excursions in the forest.
In this virgin setting, various rare species may be observed such as the
"Pawi" or Common Pipin-Guan (Aburria pipile), an endangered specie of wild
turkey that lives almost exclusively in this area. Another extraordinary
daily occurrence is the return of the beautiful "Yellowtail" or Crested
Oropendola by the hundreds, to their nests early morning or at dawn.
An easy stroll along the Ju-Trail will take you to a breathtaking
view of the North Coast. We organize expeditions with our local
tour guides, who are well versed in the folklore for the region. We
will take you to the unforgettable sights and sounds of the Forest such
as the Grande Riviere Waterfall or Shark River, camping alongside the
continuous tone of the running water.
Ascend Sunset Hill to contemplate the sister isle of
Tobago while you savor your favorite herbal tea and dessert, enjoying the
sunset and the story telling. The more adventurous may wish to spend
a night in the forest, and sense the mystical powers of the wild. Become
one with nature as you ease yourself eighteen feet high on a tree, waiting
and listening for the crackling sound of the inhabitants of the forest
as they make their way through the foliage.
Step out onto the warm white sand of Grande Riviere beach
and walk in either direction to the mouths of the two rivers that border
the hotel. Local sailors and boatmen will help you find more remote
beaches otherwise accessible only by long hikes through the forest.
The most popular destinations are Paria Waterfall Beach and Madamas River
Bay. A short distance away, you can be part of a snorkeling team to Langosta,
a small cove to the northeast for the hotel. Or closer yet, you may
sail upriver on a canoe or raft. For information about these and
other expeditions consult the Expedition list at our front desk
